Every business owner must have reached the point where he/she has to invest in material handling equipment for the business. This can be a very stressful endeavor, especially if you have no clue of what to look for or where to start. Plus, it also requires a great deal of experience and capital whenever you are navigating through the different material handling solutions and equipment suppliers.
The whole decision-making process can really weigh down on you and if you’re not careful enough, then you may even end up purchasing the wrong material handling equipment for your business altogether. And that is where this article comes it; to try and explain and enlighten you on six of the things you need to have in mind when looking for a material handling equipment for your business.
- Would you accommodate sourcing all of your material handling equipment from one supplier?
When you come to think about it, you will notice that it is much easier and simpler dealing with one supplier as opposed to when you are dealing with many different suppliers which can be very time-consuming and costly as well. You will also have access to reliable support when dealing with one dealer and access to spare parts you can depend on.
- Is the piece of equipment available the one you are looking for, or just the one available at the time?
Dealers and suppliers are always looking to make a sale at the end of the day and may even end up selling you the wrong equipment or one that doesn’t totally cover all of your business needs. Your lack of knowledge in this field can prove to be very costly on your part. Do adequate research on the topic and only step out to purchase material handling equipment after you have known all the basics.
- Is the supplier you buying from going to support and assist you with brands they’re able to provide?
You may be lucky enough to find a dealer who is willing to look for and provide you with specialty equipment. They may not even have that equipment readily available in their stocks. But this is not the case with all dealers and suppliers.
- What’s the warranty and when don’t you honor it?
It’s quite obvious that there will be some risks involved when purchasing and handling equipment and this is where warranties come in handy. However, there are situations where your warranty may be considered to be void like when the warranty period expires or if the machine actually gets damaged as a result of your negligence and not the equipment’s own failure.
- What is the dealer’s average response time for breakdowns?
You need to deal with the suppliers that you can count on for routine servicing and maintenance of your material handling equipment. But it is the unplanned maintenance, which you need to worry about more and whether the suppliers will actually come and tend to your machines and in a timely fashion.
- Will your business still supports me in the long-term and will it still be here?
It’s common knowledge that companies come and go, and if you’re not careful, you may end up dealing with a company which is doomed to fail very soon which can leave you in hot soup in case anything happens to the handling equipment that requires the supplier’s attention.
